Sugar Maple.  Acer Saccharum.

You probably know Sugar Maple as the tree whose sap is boiled to make maple syrup.  Well Sugar Maple, aka Hard Maple, also has excellent resistance to abrasion and wear, making it ideal wood flooring for high traffic areas.  They make cutting boards out of hard maple for a reason!  Sugar Maple is also the wood of choice for ballroom and gymnasium floors.

Sugar Maple trees grown above the 38th parallel, as ours are, are renowned for their very tight and uniform grain—the result of the shorter growing season.  This makes the wood of northern Sugar Maple trees extremely durable.

Hull Forest Products mills its Natural grade Sugar Maple from logs with a mix of brown heartwood and light colored sapwood.

Natural Sugar Maple has knots of all colors and size and occasional natural markings such as mineral streak (a narrow darkened area running parallel with the grain caused by minerals the tree extracted from the soil when it was growing).
