Red Oak. Quercus Rubrum.
Character knots and beauty marks give rustic panache to our Natural grade Red Oak wood flooring, which has only 33 to 66 percent clear grain. Natural grade Red Oak gets interest and color variation from knots, worm track, and mineral streak--a narrow darkened area running parallel with the grain caused by minerals the tree extracted from the soil when it was growing.
Natural grade Red Oak is also known for its pin knots, places where twigs once jutted out from the trunk of the tree. Northern Red Oak makes wonderful character flooring because of its tendency for epicormic branching (the formation of many small twigs off the main stem.) These branches leave a legacy of small pin knots in the wood.
We hand select this solid oak plank flooring for the knots and blemishes that nature gave it.
- Red Oak’s warm reddish golden hue is a classic look that works with any décor. This wood takes stain beautifully and a wide variety of finish tones, from light pickled white to medium reddish brown to dark espresso can be achieved.
- Red Oak makes an extremely durable wood floor and holds up well in high-traffic areas.
A traditional choice for flooring, furniture, and cabinetry, Red Oak is a durable and resilient wood known for its ability to resist rot and insect damage. Our industrial grade red oak planking even graces the stables at West Point, where it stands up to whatever the horses dish out.
