Red Maple.  Acer Rubrum.

Natural grade Red Maple wide plank flooring is milled from top end 2 and 3A Common Red Maple lumber that contains a mix of brown heartwood and light colored sapwood.  Natural Red Maple has knots of all colors and sizes, color variation, and occasional character markings such as mineral streak (a narrow darkened area running parallel with the grain caused by minerals the tree extracted from the soil when it was growing), worm track, and a beautiful wave like pattern or “curl” in the grain.  These planks also have some coarse areas, adding to the rustic appearance.  

Red Maple’s properties are similar to that of Sugar Maple.  The sapwood is grayish white and the heartwood is brown. It makes a very durable floor.  

Maple trees have dark colored heartwood and pale colored sapwood.  Some folks prefer the light colored sapwood, while others like the color variation produced by the combination of sapwood and heartwood.
