Wood Flooring : Our Harvesting and Milling Process

A newly harvested Hull plank floor begins in the forest. Not at the sawmill. And certainly not at the lumber pile.

We personally manage our forests, and those of many of our clients, for trees that will yield ideal flooring planks. Our team of foresters identifies trees that are ready for harvest and coordinates with our harvesting crews, who cut the specified trees and sort the logs accordingly. Upon arrival at our mill, the logs are further inspected.  Those meeting our criteria for proper form (diameter, centered heart, tight even growth, clear faces, sound defect, or unusual figure or shape) are labeled and sorted separately.

At our sawmill these logs are processed in batches to ensure they are opened up with the greatest care to yield thicker, wider, more attractive planks with a greater amount of vertical grain for added stability.  Even our very wide lumber is exceptionally stable when sawn from the proper diameter logs.

As the lumber exits the mill, our graders inspect every plank for our flooring inventory, and those that don’t make the cut always have an alternative home.  After closely monitored air drying and computer-controlled kiln drying in our biomass-powered dry kilns, our wood is ready for custom milling upon order.  Most items are always in stock and require 4-6 weeks milling lead time. We can also accommodate any special request with additional lead time.

We are involved in the entire process of bringing wood from the forest to your floor.

Because we start in the forest and handle the logs ourselves, you get a better quality floor. Learn about our quality and our price guarantees.

The quality and craftsmanship of our wood floors are unparalelled. We offer you the best price and highest quality, guaranteed.

Reclaimed woods are easy for us. We don’t have to do all the work!

In addition to manufacturing new flooring, Hull Forest Products offers reclaimed wood flooring. We have partnered with top deconstruction companies in the Northeast, a region prized for its historical structures and reclaimed wood inventory, from New England to the Virginias.

Fortunately, the northeastern United States is an abundant wood basket not only in terms of forests, but also historic demolition projects.  (In fact we have rehabilitated some of these sites ourselves).  Longleaf heart pine can be found in many old mill and factory buildings built during the Industrial Revolution.   We work with a select few companies who specialize in reclamation of this and other historic woods on a large scale. Let us know what type of reclaimed wood you are looking for, and we will do our best to produce it for you.

In nature, nothing goes to waste.  We practice this same philosophy throughout all aspects of our operations.

From breathing new life into reclaimed lumber salvaged from a decaying past, to finding a very specific and complete use for every item we harvest from the forest, Hull Forest Products is committed to practicing responsible forestry and making sustainable forest products that will meet the needs of society and protect the future of working forests.

Everything we harvest in the forest has a use, and nothing goes to waste. Logs too small for milling become firewood. A portion of tops and branches become wood chips for landscaping or biomass fuel, while the rest are purposely left to enrich the soil and provide cover for wildlife. Bark removed from logs at our mill is turned into mulch for landscaping, and the sawdust becomes bedding for animals as well as fuel for the biomass kilns that dry our flooring.

When a harvest takes place, small openings are created in each area where an individual tree was selected for harvest. These openings allow sunlight to reach the forest floor and make it possible for adjacent trees to grow larger and for new trees to sprout. It's all part of the cycle.
