Technical Specifications: How We Craft Your Wide Plank Floor

Quality

Less than 5 percent of our annual production capacity is chosen to become a Hull plank floor. We don't use our "run of the mill" lumber to make our floors. We look for only the clearest, brightest, most striking, figured, or unique planks to pass on to our wide plank flooring department. We saw millions of board feet annually, so we know the best when we see it. Our lumbermen and sawyers (with up to 30 years on the job at our mill) have helped millions of potential floor planks through the sawing and drying process. These seasoned craftsmen hand select the top five percent that graduate to our wide plank flooring line.

Because Hull floor planks are hand selected from among so many others for their appearance and special features, our floors stand a cut above the rest. And all of our floors come with a lifetime quality guarantee.

Our Technical Specifications:

  • Because of our commitment to maximum value for the consumer, end trimming is not standard on our wood flooring. If you would like your floor end trimmed, please let us know and we will accommodate you.
  • Plank lengths are available from 8 feet to 16 feet.  Never does the plank length for an order average less than 8 feet—making our wood flooring's minimum average length longer than other manufacturers’ maximum length.
  • We measure our plank widths across the reveal (the portion visible once your floor is installed).  So a 5" plank, for example, actually measures 5 1/4" including the tongue. Our standard wood flooring plank thickness is 3/4". We can mill any thickness thinner than that as well.
  • All orders are custom milled to your specifications so we can match any request, including roughsawn surface, skip planed hit or miss, all sapwood, no sapwood, etc.
  • All planks have a 5/16" top wear layer and are milled tongue and groove 2 sides with a 1/4" deep tongue that is rounded all the way around for ease of installation. Hardwood wood flooring planks are also milled with 1/8" deep back relief.
  • All of our flooring and paneling is kiln dried in our computer monitored biomass-powered dry kilns to save energy and create a superior quality product.
  • Rift and Quarter Sawn flooring products are a mix of 50 percent rift, 50 percent quarter sawn lumber. Rift sawn lumber has the growth rings at 30 to 60 degrees from the surface of the board. Quarter sawn lumber has growth rings at 60 to 90 degrees from the surface of the board. Plain sawn products have growth rings from 0 to 30 degrees from the surface of the board.
  • The average lead time for standard wood flooring orders is 4-6 weeks.
  • Most of our customers want random width floors (3 or more widths in random amounts). However, some prefer orders of all one width or a specific repeating pattern. Please note that orders of all one width or repeating patterns are subject to a surcharge; please call or email for more information.

Our Process:

Your floor, whether flat sawn or quarter and rift sawn, is made with the greatest care. Each species and grade of plank meet strict requirements for color, character, size, and percent of clear surface area. Floor planks are kiln-dried with renewable energy in our on-site biomass powered kilns. Since 1982 we have recycled our sawdust to power our dry kilns, reducing our energy costs and our consumption of fossil fuels. We pass the savings on to you.

Our sawyers take the time to reorient each log face several times during sawing. As a result, each plank is an original, with a varied grain appearance that is pleasing to the eye. The plank shown above will forever be a perfect snapshot of the inside of this northern red oak log.

Our Guarantee:

We expect our floors to hold up to generations of use and we offer a lifetime guarantee on every wood floor we make. If a problem arises that is attributed to our manufacturing or to a defective product, we will replace the material.

Why Our Prices Are So Good:

Our Environmental Commitment:

You can feel good about your wide plank flooring because it comes from wood grown sustainably in the United States, which, unlike many developing nations, has stringent environmental standards in place. All of our wood is harvested according to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) guidelines, which are designed to protect wildlife, plant life, air, soil, and water quality as well as the forest. Our sawmill holds FSC chain-of-custody certificate SCS-COC-002641 and we do offer FSC-certified flooring and lumber. In addition, our own forestland is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) via SmartWood, a program of the Rainforest Alliance's Sustainable Forestry Division. Our forest management/chain-of-custody certification code is SW-FM/COC-000193. More on our green certification and forest conservation work.
