The ancient art of inlay is a decorative technique in which contrasting colored pieces are inserted into a depression to achieve a design effect. Inlay is similar to marquetry, in which wood inlays are used over the entire surface of an object to create a trompe l'oeil effect.

Hardwood inlays range from classic to contemporary and are increasingly popular as homeowners seek to personalize their floors with custom borders and accents, such as these shown below.
